BC Building Code

The BC Building Code is based on the National Codes, with changes made to reflect the specific geography, climate, and local government needs of the province. These codes regulate how new construction, building alterations, repairs, and demolitions are done in BC, setting a minimum requirement for safety, health, accessibility, fire and structural protection of buildings, and energy and water efficiency. You can find the entirety of the BC Building Code here.

2024 Changes

The BC Building Code is typically revised on a 4 year  basis to ensure it is up to date with the best practices and safety procedures. The specific 2024 changes include:

  • More complete and specific language for constructing extended rough-ins for radon subfloor depressurization systems.

  • Adopting cooling requirements to provide one living space that does not exceed 26°C.

  • Retaining existing ventilation requirements for systems serving single-dwelling units.

  • Significant revisions to Part 4 earthquake design have been made but currently the 2018 BC Building Code can still be used for earthquake design as an alternative.
